How to safely transport palletised Drums

Introducing the Drumclip®

Securing Drums on a truck to ensure safe transportation without the risk of load shift, simply put, a real pain. To overcome this problem with a quick, safe and low-cost solution the Drumclip® has been developed.

Usually large corner boards or a pallet on top are used to tie down the palletised drums. However, as the video shows, they don’t do much when the driver brakes instantly, resulting in dangerous situations. (please note the front pallet on the truck in the video is secured with the Drumclip).

This traditional method also doesn’t eliminate “spinning” of the drums on the pallets during transport. Spinning can lead to drums drilling a hole straight through the pallet.

To stabilise drums, eliminate load shift and/or spinning in transit, there is only 1 smart and safe solution, the Drumclip. Not only is this the safest solution to transport palletised drums, it is also the easiest and most cost effective way.

What is a Drumclip

Drumclip on DrumThe Drumclip is a patented, innovative plastic tool for securing drums on a pallet and in a trailer.

The Drumclip makes it easier to secure drums on a pallet, in a trailer or in a container. This means that the Drumclip can be used for transporting drums on land (certified) and at sea (not certified).

The use of the Drumclip for pallet stability of the pallet load with drums is certified according to ISTA 3 E Pallet Stability and EUMOS 40509 Transport Safe.

The use of the Drumclip for the overland transport of drums is tested and certified by TÜV Rheinland according to DIN EN 12195-1 for sliding tarpaulin trailers among others.

Easy & quick to use

No additional products are required other than the tension strap with which the pallets with drums are secured on the trailer and an anti-slip mat in the trailer under the pallets.

There is no need to climb onto the truck to install the Drumclips. They can simply be attached to the Drums on the ground, before the pallets are loaded on the truck.

The clips weigh only 100gr and are re-usable. They are small and therefore easy to store on the truck for future use.

Red or Green Drumclip

Which type of Drumclip is needed for the different types of drums?

Steel Tight Head Drum

There are two types of Drumclips, a red and a green Drumclip. The red drumclips are to be used with tight head steel drums. The green drumclips have a wider slot/groove and are designed to work with open head steel drums and plastic drums.

As the application is the same, we limit ourselves in this article to the red Drumclip. As explained, the red Drumclip is designed to be used with tight, or closed, head steel Drums. Drums with a closed head (UN200 litre drums) can be recognised by their closed top side.

The Red Drumclip is a plastic tool which should be used exclusively for tight, or closed, head UN200 litre drums and not for other drums.

The Red Drumclip is made of a glass-fibre reinforced plastic. The base material is mixed with a red dye. The ambient temperature at which the Drumclip may be used lies between –10 and +50 degrees celcius.

One simple application for both for internal and road transport

Aside from providing a safe solution for road transportat, the Drumclip also provides a terrific, safe solution for internal moving and storage of your drums. We often see shrinkwrap being used to “secure” drums to pallets. However, you don’t need much imagination to realise what will happen if you used shrinkwrap in the image below where the pallet is tilted. A safe and strong alternative that does secure drums to pallets is Cordstrap composite strapping. Cordstrap in combination with the Drumclip to palletise drums creates a stable transportable solution for internal (warehouse) transportation.

When the time comes that the drums need to be shipped, all you need to do is load the pallet on the truck, throw a ratchet strap over the drumclip/Cordstrap that is already on the pallet and tie the straps down.
