Eliminating Transport Moisture Damage | Case Study
A case study of how we assisted a pasta manufacturer and exporter in eliminating moisture damage in their shipping containers.
Did you know that one third of all the food that is being produced is never consumed? This equated to a shocking 1.3 billion tons of food! This amount is either wasted or lost in the supply chain. A major playor is moisture damage. Moisture damage not only damages products, but also a manufacturer finances and their reputation.
Issue
Every day, a major pasta manufacturer produces 1000 tons of dried pasta, 35 tons of fresh pasta and 60 tons of biscuits, which they export in 20ft and 40 ft containers worldwide. When they talked to us, they had a major problem.
Although they were using desiccants, 25% of their shipments were still suffering from moisture damage. Complaints were reaching peak values of €1500. An unsustainable situation.
Solution
2 of our colleagues from Cordstrap HQ, Cordstrap Moisture Control experts Bas Lenssen and Roberto Barrata, met with the manufacturer to investigate. They were using 20 pieces of 2kg clay and calcium chloride desiccants per 40 ft container. However, they were suffering rejections due to wet boxes. It was clear that levels of humidity were too high and that cargoes were suffering from container rain.
Our latest desiccant innovation, Cordstrap Moisture Control, provided the key. This product range consists of the latest calcium chloride and starch technology. It simply delivers the best absorption available on the market. The outerbags are made from high performing Tyvek© technology. This guarantees that the bags are tear resistant and leak proof and makes it possible to place moisture control products directly on top of boxes. This allows for full flexibility in the application. Bas and Roberto delivered a proposal to eliminate the container rain and sweating damage caused by condensation and deliver a major reduction in humidity levels.
Results
To take the guesswork out of selecting how much product to use, Cordstrap developed an online and free to use tool to assess your cargo’s risk. By entering information about your load, size of the container and shipping route this tool calculates your moisture risk and advises which product and how much to use. This tool demonstrated that the new Cordstrap Dry Blanket would achieve this manufacturer’s goals – while using a maximum of only four desiccants per container rather than the previous twenty!
